CREATING A UNIQUE AND BEAUTIFUL BOTTLE ART USING HOT GLUE, BICARBONATE OF SODA, AND ACRYLIC PAINT
DIY Bottle art using hot glue, bicarbonate of soda and acrylic paint is a simple and creative way to add a personal touch to your home decor or create a unique gift. The combination of baking soda and acrylic paint creates a paste that can be applied to a bottle to create a variety of designs and patterns as well as hot glue (which is entirely optional by the way). This also is a way to recycle old bottles and turn them into unique pieces of decor.

PLAIN BOTTLE
Next step:
To prepare (i.e. to clean and dry) the bottle(s) for the DIY project, remove any labels or sticky residue by soaking it in warm soapy water (which in my case, I did not do because I covered mine with genuine amount of hot glue for extra design and patterns), scrubbing it with a sponge or brush, and rinsing it thoroughly. Dry the bottle completely with a clean cloth or paper towel. Optionally, sterilize the bottle with a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water and let it dry before starting the project to ensure the paint will adhere properly.
When choosing a bottle for this DIY project, choose a bottle with a smooth surface, and consider the size and shape. Clear glass bottles work best, and avoid bottles with raised logos or designs.
Additionally, you may want to consider the overall aesthetic of the bottle and how it will fit into your desired final design. You can choose a bottle that complements the colors and style of the paint you plan to use, or one that will contrast nicely for a more striking effect. You can also use different size bottles to create a cohesive look and feel.
THE PROCESS INVOLVED:
Creating a paste using bicarbonate of soda and acrylic paint is a simple process that can be done with a few basic tools. To begin, you will need to gather the materials: bicarbonate of soda, acrylic paint, a mixing bowl, and a spoon or palette knife.
So I started by using hot glue to design my bottle for extra texture and pattern, then I mixed the bicarbonate of soda, acrylic paint, and a tablespoon of matte mod podge in a mixing bowl. The ratio of bicarbonate of soda to paint will vary depending on the consistency you desire, but a good starting point is 1 part bicarbonate of soda to 3 parts paint.
I used a wooden spatula to mix the bicarbonate of soda and paint together until smooth and thick (but not very thick) consistency was achieved.
N.B: You can experiment with different ratios until you achieve the desired consistency.
You can also add water to the mixture to make it more fluid, but keep in mind that the more fluid the paste, the more difficult it will be to control and apply to the bottle. It is important to note that the paste should not be too watery or too thick, if it's too watery it will run and if it's too thick it will be hard to apply.
Once the paste was ready, I used a brush to apply it to the bottle layer by layer with one hour apart each layer for a nice covering. You can use different techniques to create different designs as you like. In my case, I used hot glue and jute rope respectively to achieve my desired design.
2. Mix the bicarbonate of soda and acrylic paint to create a paste (I added mod podge as a sealer and to avoid cracking the paint or so I thought. This step is entirely optional but effective).
3. Apply the paste to the bottle and let it dry and repeat until the bottle is well covered.
4. Paint the bottle with acrylic paint as desired (only if you are not satisfied with the previous color you mixed with the baking soda, again, it's entirely optional)
5. Let the paint dry completely for about one to two hours
6. Create more designs with jute rope. (See here for example)
7. Seal the paint with a clear coat, if desired (optional: In my case, I used mod podge).
